Tazekka National Park

Tazekka National Park

See an isolated Atlas cedar grove on Jbel Tazekka and descend into Friuato Caves in Morocco’s Middle Atlas, near Taza.

Tazekka National Park lies in Morocco’s Middle Atlas mountains near Taza. Its main peak, Jbel Tazekka, rises to 1,980 m and is home to an isolated grove of Atlas cedars. The park was created in 1950 to protect the mountain’s natural resources. In 1989, it expanded to nearly 120 km2, taking in cork oak and holm oak forests, canyons, caves, cascades and rural landscapes. The cedar grove and Friuato Caves are two of its distinct places to see.

Friuato is on the park’s northern side, beside the Daya Chiker polje, a depression bordered by limestone. The cave system reaches 272 m deep and has chambers, narrow tunnels, natural bridges and an underground river about 3.8 km long. Visitors descend through a 100 m vertical entrance using concrete steps and a ramp. Lower levels stay at 12–14 °C, and humidity causes condensation on the walls, so bring a warm layer. The mountain receives about 180 cm of precipitation a year, mostly snow. Wildlife includes wild boars, porcupines, otters, genets, hares, African wolves and red foxes; sightings are not guaranteed.

  5. Check entry, camping and cave access locallyThis guide has no verified fee, permit, camping rule or cave schedule for the park. Ask a guide or the park office, especially for overnight stays.
