Oujda is the largest city and capital of Morocco’s Oriental region, about 15 km west of the Algerian border. It is not on the coast: the Mediterranean is roughly 55 to 60 km north, and Saidia is a common day trip or onward destination. In the central old city, narrow lanes lead to traditional Moroccan houses and markets, including jewelry and leather markets. The Grand Mosque, rebuilt after 1296, is one of Oujda’s key historic sites. Just outside the city, Bled el Gaada has Roman-era ruins, and Jbel Hamra forest lies about 5 km south of the centre, with Sidi Maafa park to its east.

Oujda is a centre of Gharnati, an Andalusi music style named after Granada, and hosts an annual International Festival of Gharnati Music. Reggada, an Amazigh dance and music tradition from the Beni Znassen tribes, also comes from the area. Winters are cool and wet, while summers are hot and dry; rainfall averages about 300 to 500 mm a year. The old city and nearby sights suit a city stop, while Saidia is an option for travelers heading to the Mediterranean. Oujda connects to western Morocco by air and rail.

Oujda in five

  1. Do not try to cross into AlgeriaThe UK government says the land and sea borders between Morocco and Algeria are closed, patrolled and monitored, and that crossing without authorization is illegal. Plan Oujda as an end point, not a gateway.UK travel advice
  2. Come by rail from the westThe tourist board says the national railway connects Marrakech to Oujda. Road travel from Fes is 330 km and about 3 hours 20 minutes by its figures, so check ONCF timetables for a seat.Trains in Morocco
  3. Walk the medina gates and the Sebti PalaceThe tourist board lists the old medina's monumental gates, the Sebti Palace cultural visit and Lalla Aicha park. A half day covers them, with the Al Kabir mosque and its fountains as a landmark.
  4. Add Saidia for the beachThe tourist board says Saidia lies about 60 km from Oujda, with a 14 km sandy beach and a marina. A day trip works, but a night is better in summer.Mediterranean coast guide
  5. Keep your Moroccan entry stampThe UK government notes that border officials should stamp your passport on entry and that some travelers have had trouble leaving without one. Check it when you arrive overland.
