Monterrey is the capital of Nuevo León and an industrial city in northern Mexico. It sits in a wide valley at the foot of the Sierra Madre Oriental, and the mountains are visible from much of the city. The historic center around the central plaza is small enough to cover on foot, so you can see it in a morning.
Go for a city stop with green space and a regional goat dish. Parque Fundidora, built on the site of a former steel mill, has trails and a lake and is the main park to visit. Order cabrito, young goat cooked over wood or charcoal, at a long lunch. For mountains, Cumbres de Monterrey National Park lies a drive south of the city, with hiking, waterfalls and the Cerro de la Silla rock formation. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable months, since summers are very hot. Plan two or three days.
Monterrey in five
- Walk Fundidora Park and Paseo Santa LucíaA former steelworks now a park, and a canal-style riverwalk that links the central plazas. Go in the early evening when it is cool, and keep an eye on the weather in summer.
- Plan for summer heatJune to August highs are well into the mid 30s °C. Do outdoor sights in the morning or after sunset, and use the air-conditioned museums at midday.
- Try cabritoRoast kid is the city's signature dish, usually served by weight at traditional restaurants. Ask about the cut and portion, and note that portions can be large.
- Reach the mountains by day tripChipinque, Cerro de la Silla, García Caves and the Cola de Caballo waterfall are within roughly an hour or so. Use a ride app or tour; trails and hours vary by season.
- Use the metro and ride apps in townTraffic is heavy at rush hour. The metro and ride apps are the easy way between the center and the Fundidora area, and a taxi is simplest after dark.

Is Monterrey worth visiting?
Yes for a city stop with parks, museums, good food and mountains close by. It is more a business and outdoors city than a postcard colonial town, so plan it as a day or two.
How many days do you need in Monterrey?
One or two days covers the plazas, Fundidora and a cabrito dinner. Add a third for García Caves, Chipinque or Cola de Caballo, which are best by day trip.
When is the best time to visit Monterrey?
February to April and October to November are mild and dry. June to August is very hot, and September brings storms. Winter nights can be cool, so bring a layer.
Is Monterrey safe for tourists?
Visitors mostly use the main business and park areas without trouble, but conditions change. Check your government's current travel advice, use ride apps or taxis after dark and ask your hotel.
How do you get from Mexico City to Monterrey?
By direct flight, about 1.5 hours, or long-distance bus, which takes roughly 11 to 12 hours. Flying is the practical choice unless you are stopping along the way.
