Mexico City is the capital of Mexico, set in a high valley about 2,240 meters (7,350 feet) above sea level. Altitude can make the first day tiring, so take the walking and the drinks slowly until you adjust. The city is large, but the areas most travelers use are walkable: the Centro Histórico, the tree-lined streets of Roma and Condesa, and the older lanes of Coyoacán.

Food is a big reason to go, from street tacos at lunch to market stalls and long sit-down meals. The National Museum of Anthropology in Chapultepec Park is a strong draw, and the city's history runs from Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital built on islands in a lake, to colonial churches and palaces raised over its ruins. It suits travelers who like busy, layered cities and don't mind long days on the metro. The dry season, roughly November to April, brings milder weather. Four or five days covers the core neighborhoods at an easy pace.
