Teotihuacán is an archaeological site in the State of Mexico, about 50 km northeast of Mexico City. The city was built roughly between 100 BCE and 550 CE and was one of the largest in the pre-Columbian Americas. Visitors come for the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon, which rise beside the Avenue of the Dead, a long north-south walkway lined with platforms and smaller structures. The scale of the ruins is the main reason to go.

Plan a full day, since most of the site is open ground and you will walk a lot in the sun. Bring water and a hat. The dry season, roughly November to April, is the most comfortable time to visit. Allow at least half a day for the main sights, and a full day if you want to climb a pyramid or join a guided walk. Buses to the site leave from the Northern bus terminal in Mexico City, or you can book a tour.

  2. Plan on looking, not climbingThe Pyramid of the Sun has been closed to climbing since 2020. INAH allowed a first-level climb of the Pyramid of the Moon in May 2025, but reports differ after the April 2026 attack, so ask at the gate.Tickets, hours and rules

  4. Carry water, a hat and sunscreenThe Avenue of the Dead runs about 2 km with almost no shade, and the site sits at roughly 2,300 m. Sun and altitude tire you faster than the distance suggests.
  5. Preview it at the anthropology museumMexico City's national anthropology museum has a Teotihuacán hall that makes the walk through the ruins easier to read. Do it the day before.Mexico City

Teotihuacán FAQ

How do you get to Teotihuacán from Mexico City?

By bus from the Terminal Central del Norte, about an hour each way, or on a guided tour from the center. The bus is cheapest and a tour handles timing. Allow extra time for traffic on the way back.

Can you climb the Pyramid of the Sun?

No. The summit of the Pyramid of the Sun has been closed since 2020 and only the INAH can reopen it. The Pyramid of the Moon first level was allowed in May 2025, but its status is unclear after the April 2026 attack, so ask at the gate.

How long do you need at Teotihuacán?

Three to four hours covers the Ciudadela, the Avenue of the Dead and both pyramids. Add an hour for the site museum. Hot afternoons shorten most visits, so start early.

Do you need a guide at Teotihuacán?

No, the site is open and signed, but little explanatory text stands in front of the buildings. A guide at the gate or a tour earns its cost if you want the history; a bus plus a museum visit the day before works if you do not.

What is the best time to visit Teotihuacán?

A weekday at 8am between October and February, when mornings are dry and cool. Sundays bring large crowds because entry is free for Mexican nationals, and the spring equinox draws very large ones.
