Veracruz State runs along Mexico's Gulf of Mexico coast, from low plains up into the mountains of the central highlands. The port city of Veracruz has handled ships and traders for centuries, and its historic plazas, seafront and seafood restaurants still show that history. Inland, the state capital Xalapa sits higher, where the air is cooler and the hillsides grow coffee.
The El Tajín ruins, a short drive from Papantla in the north-central part of the state, are the main archaeological site. They are known for their pyramids and carved niches, built by the Totonac people. The state is also known for son jarocho music and the cooking that goes with it, such as huachinango a la veracruzana, red snapper cooked with tomato, olives and chile. Plan four to six days to cover the coast, the ruins and the highlands at an easy pace. Visit from November to April, when rain is lighter. Hurricane season runs from June through November.

Is Veracruz State worth visiting?
Yes, for the Totonac ruins at El Tajín, the Olmec heads in Xalapa's anthropology museum and the coffee hills around Xalapa. It is a poor fit if you want only a resort beach.
How many days do you need in Veracruz State?
Four to six days covers Veracruz port, Xalapa, a day at El Tajín and one coffee town. Add a day if you want the lake at Catemaco.
Should I stay in Xalapa or Veracruz city?
Stay in Xalapa for museums, cooler weather and the coffee towns. Stay in Veracruz port for the Malecón, seafood and the seafront. The two are a few hours apart by bus, so one night in each works.
How do you get to El Tajín from Veracruz?
Take a bus toward Papantla, then a taxi or local colectivo to the ruins. Going from Veracruz in one day is a long trip, so a night in Papantla is easier.
When is the best time to visit Veracruz State?
November to April brings drier, cooler weather, though cold northerly winds can reach the coast. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June to November, so check forecasts before you fly.
Do I need Spanish?
Some Spanish helps a lot outside hotels and the main tourist sites. Bus staff, market vendors and taxi drivers often speak little English.
