Baja California is a Mexican state at the northwestern tip of the country, covering the northern half of the Baja California peninsula. Tijuana is its largest city and sits on the US border. The capital is Mexicali, in the Mexicali Valley, where midsummer temperatures often pass 47 °C (116.6 °F). Ensenada, Rosarito and San Felipe are other notable towns on the coast. The state borders California to the north, so it is reached easily by land from the US.
Travelers come for Pacific beaches, food in Tijuana, and the Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico's main wine-producing area. Inland, pine forests in the Sierra de Juárez and Sierra de San Pedro Mártir contrast with desert to the east. Jesuit and Dominican mission sites date from the 1700s. The northwest coast has a Mediterranean climate, with dry, mild summers and cool, rainy winters, and coastal fog is common.

Is Baja California safe for tourists?
Millions cross each year, but the state carries cautionary government advice. Keep to main roads in daylight, stay in busy areas and read the current US or UK guidance before you go.
Do I need a passport to cross into Baja California?
Yes, a passport is required for most visitors, and a Mexican tourist permit is needed beyond the border zone or for longer stays. Check your own country's rules for the return crossing.
What is there to do in Baja California besides the beach?
Eat in Tijuana, drive the coast to Ensenada, taste wine in the Valle de Guadalupe, and see La Bufadora. It is more about food and wine than resorts.
How long does it take to drive from Tijuana to Ensenada?
About 1 to 1.5 hours on the toll road, about 100 km south. Border waits on the way out can add time in either direction.
When is the best time to visit Baja California?
April to May and September to October for warm days and fewer crowds. The wine harvest runs in late summer. Summers are warm and busy; winters are cool.
