Ensenada is a port city on the Pacific coast of Baja California, Mexico, about 110 km (67 mi) south of the US border. The name means "inlet" or "cove" in Spanish. Its deep-water harbor is the only one in Baja California and a major cruise and cargo hub, and fish tacos are the dish to try: battered white fish in a corn tortilla with cabbage, creamy sauce and salsa.
The Guadalupe Valley, about 30 km from the city, produces over 90% of Mexico's wine, with more than 65 wineries, many offering tours and tastings. La Bufadora, a marine geyser about 35 km south on Punta Banda, sends water jets up to about 20 meters high. Drive in on the MX-1D toll road from the border, or fly into Tijuana International Airport, about 112 km north. Late summer and early fall are typically the warmest months, while May Gray and June Gloom bring cool, overcast mornings in late spring and early summer. A two or three day stay covers the harbor, a valley visit and La Bufadora.

Is Ensenada worth visiting?
Yes, for seafood, wine and a laid-back harbor town. It is less polished than Cabo and more relaxed than Tijuana, which suits food-focused trips.

About 100 km, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours on the toll road. Border waits on the way out can add time.

A blowhole south of Ensenada where waves force seawater up through a rock channel, with a short walk from the car park. Conditions change with the swell.
How many days do you need in Ensenada?
Two or three days covers the harbor, La Bufadora and a day in the Valle de Guadalupe. One night works for a quick weekend.
When is the best time to visit Ensenada?
April to May and August to October for warm days and wine harvest. Winters are cool, with whales passing offshore.
