San Agustinillo

San Agustinillo

San Agustinillo is a small fishing village on Oaxaca's Pacific coast, with a 1,300-meter beach, a sheltered west end for swimming and turtle nesting from June to December.

San Agustinillo is a small fishing village and beach on the Pacific coast of Oaxaca State, Mexico, in the municipality of Santa María Tonameca. It sits just east of Mazunte and La Ventanilla, where the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains meet the ocean. To the west, Zipolite and Puerto Ángel are reached by road; together these coastal villages are called the Riviera Oaxaqueña or Costa Chica Oaxaqueña. Steep cliffs and hills keep large hotels out, so the shoreline has small, rustic lodgings. Colectivo buses run from Pochutla along Highway 175's coastal loop.

The beach is about 1,300 meters long, faces open ocean and is split into three sections by rocky outcrops. Playa Rinconcito, at the west end, is relatively sheltered and considered the safest place to swim. Playa Aragón, the easternmost section, has strong waves and a strong undertow and is not safe for casual swimmers. Swimmers should take care, since tropical waves and other weather can bring abnormally high waves and lead to closures. From June to December, olive ridley sea turtles can be seen laying eggs on the sand.

When is the best time to visit San Agustinillo?

November to April is dry and sunny. May to October is rainy and green, with rougher surf. Storms are possible in autumn, so check forecasts before you travel.
