Loreto

Go to Loreto for boat trips into the marine park and the Sea of Cortez islands, then stay for a small town with an old mission.

Loreto is a small town on the Sea of Cortez in Baja California Sur, Mexico. Jesuit missionaries founded its mission in 1697, and the mission church is one of the town's main sights. The water is the main reason to visit. Loreto Bay National Park covers the islands and channels offshore, including Isla Coronado, and boat operators run trips into it from town.

Travelers come for boat days: snorkeling, fishing and trips to the islands. Plan one or two nights for the town and one boat day. Longer stays suit those who use Loreto as a base for island trips or who are driving the length of the peninsula. Check park rules on fishing, anchoring and landing before you book a boat, since they apply to every trip.

Loreto in five

  1. Book island trips for the calm hoursBoat trips to Isla Coronado and the marine park depend on wind, and mornings are usually calmer. Go with a licensed operator and ask about cancellation if the wind picks up.
  2. Plan whale watching for winterBlue and other whales visit the Sea of Cortez in winter, with sightings often reported from roughly January to March. Check with operators and avoid any that chase the animals.
  3. Visit the old missionThe Misión de Nuestra Señora de Loreto dates from 1697 and sits by the main plaza. It is a short walk from the waterfront, and the nearby museum covers the missionary era.
  4. Drive to San Javier in daylightA mountain road leads to the Misión San Francisco Javier, partly unpaved and slow. Check conditions at your hotel, carry water and be back before dark.
  5. Fly in or drive Highway 1Loreto has a small airport, and Highway 1 links La Paz (4 to 5 hours) and Mulegé (about 2 hours). Fill the tank when you can, since towns are far apart.Mulegé

Loreto FAQ

Is Loreto worth visiting?

Yes if you like quiet towns, boating, whale watching and mission history. It is not a nightlife or big-resort destination, which is why many travelers prefer it to Los Cabos.

How do you get to Loreto?

Fly into Loreto's small airport, or drive Highway 1 from La Paz in about 4 to 5 hours. Los Cabos is a longer drive, so many visitors fly in and rent a car only if they plan to explore.

When is the best time to visit Loreto?

November to April is dry and mild, with whales in winter. June to September is very hot, and hurricane season brings storm and flight risk around September and October.

Can you see whales in Loreto?

Yes, usually in winter, with blue whale sightings often reported roughly January to March. Book with a licensed operator that follows the distance rules.

How many days do you need in Loreto?

Two or three days covers a boat trip, the mission and a drive to San Javier. Add a day if you want to continue to Mulegé or La Paz on the way.
