La Paz is the capital of Baja California Sur, the Mexican state at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula. The city sits on the Bay of La Paz, on the Gulf of California side of the peninsula. The malecón, the seafront promenade, follows the bay, with restaurants and hotels along it, and it is a good place to watch the sunset. The historic center, around the main plaza and cathedral, is small enough to explore on foot.
Boats leave the marinas for Espíritu Santo island, where sea lions gather at Los Islotes, and whale sharks visit the bay in season. Balandra, a beach a drive north of town, has calm, shallow water. La Paz suits wildlife and beach travelers who want a quieter stay than Los Cabos. For a first visit, plan three to four days: one for the malecón and center, one for a boat trip and one for a beach day. The cooler months, roughly November to April, are the most comfortable for walking and boating.
La Paz in five
- Book Espíritu Santo with a licensed operatorBoat trips to the island and the sea lion colony at Los Islotes leave from the town. Protected-area rules can cap visitor numbers, so book ahead in peak season and ask what the permit covers.
- Check the rules for Balandra beachBalandra is a shallow bay north of town. Access can be capped and managed to protect the area, so confirm current times and limits before you drive out, and arrive early.
- Time whale shark seasonWhale sharks gather in the bay roughly from October to April. Swim only with an operator that keeps its distance, limits group size and does not let you touch the animal.
- Walk the malecón at sunsetThe waterfront promenade is the town's living room in the evening, with cafes, ice cream and a view across the bay. It is flat, free and an easy end to a boat day.
- Use La Paz as the Baja road-trip hubTodos Santos is about 1 hour west, Los Cabos about 2 hours south and Loreto 4 to 5 hours north. Rent a car if you want beaches and small towns beyond the city.Todos Santos
