Todos Santos is a town on the Pacific side of Baja California Sur, Mexico, about an hour by car from Cabo San Lucas. It lies a few kilometers inland from the ocean, in a valley with palm trees, which sets it apart from the resort strip further south. Most visitors come for the art galleries, many of them in older houses along the central streets, and for the surf beaches to the west.

Many visitors come for a day from Cabo. Two nights let you walk the town after dinner and reach the beaches at a slower pace. The cooler months, November through April, are the usual choice, since summer is hot. Plan at least two nights if you want to surf. If you drive yourself, buy Mexican liability insurance first, since many home policies do not cover Mexico.

Todos Santos in five

  1. Swim with care at the Pacific beachesCurrents are strong and many beaches are better for walking and surfing than for swimming. Ask a local shop about the day's conditions or swim at calmer coves on the Sea of Cortez side.
  2. Stay a night for the quiet after day trippersVisitors from Cabo arrive late morning and leave by late afternoon. A night gives you empty galleries and an unhurried dinner.Southern Baja
  3. Rent a car or hire a driver for the beachesPlaya Los Cerritos and other beaches sit several kilometers from town, and taxis are limited. A car also lets you reach La Paz.
  4. Visit in winter and springDays are warm and dry from about November to April, and nights can be cool. Summer is very hot, and September and October carry the highest storm risk.
  5. Pick your Baja base before you bookTodos Santos suits slow stays but has no swimmable town beach. Compare it with the Cape and La Paz before choosing where to sleep.La Paz

Todos Santos FAQ

Is Todos Santos worth visiting?

Yes for a quieter, artier Baja than Los Cabos: galleries, courtyard cafes and wide Pacific beaches. Skip it if you want a swimmable beach next to your hotel or lively nightlife.

Can you swim at Todos Santos beaches?

Often not safely, because Pacific currents are strong. Many beaches suit surfing and walking, so check conditions locally and swim at calmer spots on the Sea of Cortez side.

How far is Todos Santos from Cabo San Lucas?

About an hour by car along the Pacific highway, and about 1.5 hours from Los Cabos airport. La Paz is roughly one hour north.

Is Todos Santos a day trip or an overnight?

A day trip from Cabo works if you start early, but a night gives you the evening and the beaches. Stay two nights if you want to surf or move slowly.

When is the best time to visit Todos Santos?

November to April for warm, dry days. The summer months are hot, and September and October carry the highest hurricane risk, so check storm forecasts before you go.
