Cabo Pulmo

Visitors come for clear water over a protected reef and a quiet fishing village about two hours from Los Cabos.

Cabo Pulmo is a small fishing village on the east coast of Baja California Sur, Mexico, on the Sea of Cortez. The village sits inside Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, where fishing has been limited, and the coral reef there has recovered since. People come mainly to snorkel and dive over the reef, where the water is clear and reef fish are easy to see. The village has a few streets of small inns, dive shops and restaurants, so evenings are quiet and the pace is slow.

Decide between a day trip and a stay before you book. A day trip from Los Cabos is about two hours by road, which leaves less time in the water. Staying on site means early departures for the reef and more time out with a guide. The water is warmest in late summer and early fall. Two to three nights covers the reef and a few trips out, and it leaves time to rest between dives.

Cabo Pulmo in five

  1. Go to snorkel or dive, not for resort comfortsThe village has a handful of dive shops, small hotels and simple restaurants. Bring what you need, because shops and services are limited.
  2. Pick the right season for your goalWarm water and strong visibility often come in late summer and autumn, but that is also hurricane season. Spring and early winter are safer bets.
  3. Carry cashPark fees, boat trips and small restaurants may not take cards, and there is no ATM in the village. Withdraw in San José del Cabo or Los Barriles first.San José del Cabo
  4. Check the road before you set outPart of the access has been unpaved in the past, and rain can make it rough. A high-clearance car helps; ask your rental company what is covered.
  5. Book boats and dive shops in advanceOperators work within park limits on group size. Reserve before the busy winter months, especially for a guided snorkel trip.

Cabo Pulmo FAQ

Is Cabo Pulmo worth the drive?

Yes, if you snorkel or dive. The reef is protected and the water is clear, but the village is small and the drive is long, so it suits people who want nature over resort life.

Can you do Cabo Pulmo as a day trip from Cabo San Lucas?

Yes, but it is a long day: allow about 2 hours each way by road, less time in the water, and an early start. One night in the village is more relaxed.

When is the best time to snorkel at Cabo Pulmo?

Warm water and good visibility run from late spring through autumn, but September and October bring hurricane risk. Spring and November to December are safer.

Do you need a guide to snorkel Cabo Pulmo?

Park rules and local operators govern access to the reef. Book a licensed local operator for boat trips and check current rules on the day.

Is there an ATM in Cabo Pulmo?

Do not count on one. Bring cash from San José del Cabo or Los Barriles and confirm whether your dive shop takes cards.
