Acapulco is a beach city on the Pacific coast of Guerrero, in southern Mexico. It became a resort in the 1950s, when hotels were built around the curve of the bay. Most hotels, restaurants and bars sit along the Costera Miguel Alemán, the avenue that follows the bay. The cliff divers of La Quebrada jump from the rocks above a narrow inlet during scheduled shows. Visitors from Mexico and abroad still come for the beaches, the shows and the nightlife.
Hurricane Otis hit in October 2023 and damaged much of the city, so check current conditions before you book. The dry season, roughly November through April, is the most settled time to visit. Hurricane season runs from June to November. Plan at least three nights, or four or five if you want a day trip or a slower pace.
Acapulco in five
- Read the current advice for Guerrero firstGovernments publish state-by-state advice for Mexico, and Guerrero has drawn some of its strictest wording. Read the US and UK pages the week you book and again before you fly.US advisory for Mexico
- Expect storm repairs along the bayHurricane Otis hit in October 2023, and rebuilding of hotels and shopfronts has been uneven since. Check recent guest photos for any property before you book, not just its listing.
- Sleep on the bay side for a short stayThe Costera Miguel Alemán keeps restaurants, buses and taxis within reach. The Diamante zone near the airport suits resort stays but leaves you reliant on cars.
- Go to La Quebrada for the show, not the viewDivers jump from the cliff at set times. A paid viewing platform or a restaurant terrace keeps your sightline clear; ask your hotel for current show times.
- Fly in rather than driving a coastal loopThe Autopista del Sol from Mexico City takes roughly 4.5 to 5 hours. Between beach towns, flying beats a long road day.Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa

Is Acapulco safe to visit?
Safety varies by area and changes with time. The US and UK both publish specific advice for Guerrero, so read the current wording before you book, keep to the main tourist areas and use official taxis or ride apps at night.
Is Acapulco still damaged from Hurricane Otis?
Much has reopened, but recovery has been uneven since October 2023. Look for recent guest photos of the exact hotel and ask about pools, restaurants and beach access that may still be closed.
How far is Acapulco from Mexico City?
About 380 km by road, roughly 4.5 to 5 hours on the Autopista del Sol, or a short flight. Long-distance buses run from Mexico City's southern terminal.
When is the best time to go to Acapulco?
November to April, when it is dry and warm. June to October brings rain and Pacific hurricane risk, though rooms are cheaper.
What is La Quebrada?
A cliff where divers plunge into a narrow inlet, with shows at set times. Book a viewing spot or a nearby terrace if you want a clear sightline.
