Taxco is a hillside town in the Mexican state of Guerrero, roughly three hours by road southwest of Mexico City. Silver mining has shaped the town since the colonial period, and silver workshops still line its streets, where you can compare jewelry and tableware before you buy. The baroque Santa Prisca church, completed in the 18th century, stands above the central square, Plaza Borda.
Taxco suits a day trip or a single night for travelers who want craft shopping, slow walks and a quieter base than the capital. Expect long climbs and uneven cobblestones, and allow a full day to walk between the church, the plaza and the shops at an unhurried pace. The drier months from November to April make the hills easier to walk. Check current travel advice for Guerrero before you book.

- Read the travel advice for Guerrero firstThe UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the state of Guerrero, except Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa reached by air. Check your own government's current advice before you plan a visit.UK travel advice for Mexico
- Arrive early and leave in daylightThe drive from Mexico City takes about 2.5–3 hours each way, so a day trip means leaving early. Plan to be on the road back before dark rather than after dinner.
- See Santa Prisca before the weekend crowdsThe baroque church faces Plaza Borda, and mornings on weekdays are the quiet time. Weekends fill with visitors from the capital and Cuernavaca.
- Buy silver from a shop that stamps itSterling pieces should carry a .925 mark. Compare two or three workshops and the market before you buy, and ask who made the piece.
- Wear flat shoes for the cobblesStreets climb sharply, and the best viewpoints and workshops sit uphill from the square. A day in town is more tiring than the map suggests.

Is Taxco safe to visit?
Taxco is in Guerrero, where the UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel, with exceptions that do not include Taxco. Read your own government's current advice, travel by day and decide before you book.
How do you get from Mexico City to Taxco?
By bus from Mexico City's southern terminal in about 2.5–3 hours, by car along the toll road, or on a guided day trip. The bus is simplest. Book a morning departure and the last return before dark.
Is Taxco worth it for silver shopping?
Yes if you like jewelry: the town grew around silver and workshops fill the center. Look for .925 stamps, compare shops and bargain gently at the market. Skip it if you only want cheap souvenirs.
How long do you need in Taxco?
A long day covers Santa Prisca, a workshop and a viewpoint. One night lets you see the town lit in the evening and avoids a same-day drive, though the hills tire you.
When is the best time to visit Taxco?
November to March, when it is dry and mild at roughly 1,800 m. Holy Week brings large processions and crowds, so book early or avoid it, and June to September is rainy.
