Morelia is the capital and largest city of Michoacán, in north-central Mexico, set in the Guayangareo Valley. Its historic center has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991. Most of the notable sites sit in that center, which keeps close to its original 1541 layout, with wide streets, plazas and gentle curves that make walking easy. Most historic buildings are made of pink cantera stone, which gives the city a unified look and its nickname, the City of Pink Stone.

The cathedral dominates the center, and its two towers stand about 60 meters high. Museums cover pre-Hispanic and colonial art, state archaeology and history, and independence leader José María Morelos, who was born in 1765 in a house that is now a museum. Morelia suits travelers who want architecture, museums and a walkable city. Plan two or three days for the center, then add a day trip to the Lázaro Cárdenas Forest, an ecological reserve south of the city. Most rain falls from June to September, so pack a rain layer for those months.

Morelia in five

  1. See the cathedral by day and at nightThe cathedral and the plaza fill with families in the evening, and the building is lit after dark. Go inside by day and outside after sunset; check Mass times if you want to enter.
  2. Book monarch sanctuary trips in seasonSanctuaries in the mountains east of the city are open roughly November to March. Go with a licensed guide or tour, and check conditions before you book, since access and rules change.
  3. Add Pátzcuaro by roadPátzcuaro is about 1 hour away and has its own old center and lake. Around Día de Muertos, the island of Janitzio draws large night-time crowds, so book far ahead or go by day.
  4. Taste the local sweetsMorelia's candy shops sell traditional sweets and fruit pastes, a good gift or a snack between plazas. Ask for a few to try rather than a box.
  5. Pack a layer for the altitudeAt about 1,900 m the evenings turn cool from November to February. A light jacket and comfortable shoes for cobbles make the days easier.
