Guadalajara is the capital and largest city of Jalisco, in western Mexico, at about 1,700 meters above sea level in the Atemajac Valley. It is the economic center of the Bajío region, and its electronics and software industries earned it the nickname Silicon Valley of Mexico. Most visitors stay in the historic center, where the Guadalajara Cathedral, the Degollado Theatre on Plaza de la Liberación and the Hospicio Cabañas are located. The Hospicio Cabañas holds murals by José Clemente Orozco and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.

Mariachi, tequila and birria are closely tied to Guadalajara. The San Juan de Dios Market, one of the largest indoor markets in Latin America, is a good place to start. Tequila, the town that gives the spirit its name, is a common day trip from the city. Guadalajara suits travelers who want a large Mexican city with colonial architecture and a traditional market. Most rain falls in summer, and March is the driest month, so the dry, warm winters are the easiest time to visit.
