Chichén Itzá is a Maya city on the Yucatán Peninsula in southeastern Mexico, in Yucatán state. Its main building, El Castillo, is a stepped pyramid also called the Temple of Kukulcán, and it sits in the main plaza. Nearby are a large ball court, the Sacred Cenote, a water-filled sinkhole where the Maya made offerings, and many smaller buildings. It is one of the most visited ruins in Mexico and a common day trip from Cancún and Mérida.
The site suits first-time visitors who want one famous Maya ruin in a single visit, and a few hours covers the main structures. The cooler, drier months, roughly November through April, are the most comfortable for walking between the buildings. Summer heat and humidity make the open plazas hard going. Tour groups arrive through the day, so an early start gives you more time at the pyramid and the cenote.

Chichén Itzá FAQ
Is Chichén Itzá worth it?
Yes, if you want the Yucatán's most famous Maya site. It is crowded and hot, so go at opening and plan for 2 to 3 hours; Cobá or Uxmal are quieter if you dislike crowds.
Can you climb the pyramid at Chichén Itzá?
No. Climbing El Castillo has been banned for years, and visitors must stay on the paths. You can walk the plaza, ball court and surrounding buildings.
How much time do you need at Chichén Itzá?
Two to three hours covers the main buildings. Add time for a guide, the on-site museum or a cenote stop nearby.
How far is Chichén Itzá from Cancún?
About 200 km, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by car or bus each way. A day trip is possible, but Valladolid or Pisté lets you start at opening.
When is the best time to go to Chichén Itzá?
November to March for cooler weather, arriving at 8:00. April to September is very hot, and crowds peak around the equinoxes, when the pyramid's shadow effect draws visitors.
