Mérida is the capital and largest city of Yucatán state in southeastern Mexico, about 35 km inland from the Gulf of Mexico coast. The city is nicknamed La Ciudad Blanca, the White City, probably for the white limestone on its colonial façades. Francisco de Montejo el Mozo founded it on 6 January 1542 on the site of the Maya city of T'Hó. The Cathedral of San Ildefonso, dating from 1598, faces the Plaza Grande.
Visitors come for the historic center, the mansions along Paseo de Montejo built during the henequen boom, and Yucatecan food, which uses achiote and habanero and differs from general Mexican cooking. Cochinita pibil is the best-known dish. Uxmal lies about 78 km away and Chichén Itzá about 124 km, both common day trips. Afternoons in April and May often rise above 38 °C, and the rainy season runs from June to October.

Mérida FAQ
How many days do you need in Mérida?
Three days covers the center, the markets and one ruins day trip. Add a fourth or fifth day to see Uxmal and Chichén Itzá separately or to add Celestún or a cenote. Our 3-day plan shows the split.
Is Mérida safe for tourists?
Mérida is widely regarded as one of Mexico's calmer large cities, and most visitors use ordinary city sense: keep valuables out of sight and use ride apps or registered taxis after dark. Check your government's current travel advice before you book.
What is the best time to visit Mérida?
November to February is dry, with highs around 29–31 °C. March to May is the hottest stretch, and June to October is humid with afternoon storms and hurricane-season risk. Early November brings the Hanal Pixán Day of the Dead events.
Can you visit Chichén Itzá as a day trip from Mérida?
Yes, it is about 2 hours each way by road. Leave early to beat the heat and tour coaches, or sleep in Valladolid to be closer. A guided tour suits you if you do not want to drive.
Should I stay in Mérida or Valladolid?
Stay in Mérida for food, museums and several day trips. Choose Valladolid for a small colonial town nearer to Chichén Itzá and cenotes. Many trips split one or two nights between them.
