Zacatecas is the capital of Zacatecas state in north-central Mexico, a former silver-mining city at about 2,440 m above sea level. Spanish miners found rich silver here in 1546, and by the late 16th century it ranked as the second most important city in New Spain, after Mexico City. The historic centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993, known for its colonial street plan and Baroque façades. The cathedral is built of pink stone that turns burnt orange in late afternoon sun.

Go for the old centre, with the cathedral, the Plaza de Armas and several museums, and for Cerro de la Bufa, the hill above town, with its cable car and the El Edén mine. The narrow, winding streets follow the hills. Rain falls mostly from June to September, and spring is the warmest season. Winter nights can drop below freezing, so pack warm layers.

  2. Ride the Teleférico over the old townThe cable car crosses the center to Cerro de la Bufa, a hilltop with a chapel and views. Check operating days and wind closures first.
  3. Walk the historic centerThe baroque cathedral anchors a compact UNESCO-listed old town, and most museums, plazas and restaurants are within a short walk of each other.
  4. Go underground at a mineA former silver mine near the center offers guided tours of its tunnels. Check opening days and bring a light layer, since it is cool below ground.
  5. Take it easy at 2,400 mThe altitude and dry air can tire you on the first day, and evenings are cold outside summer. Drink water and pace your climbs through the steep center.
