San Miguel de Allende is a colonial town in the state of Guanajuato, in central Mexico's Bajío region, at about 1,910 m above sea level. Its historic centre and the Sanctuary of Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. Go for the cobbled streets, the pink stone parish church and the art schools. The town played a part in the Mexican War of Independence; in 1826 it was renamed for Ignacio Allende, a leader of that movement born here.
The town has no airport, so most visitors come by road, usually from Mexico City, about 315 km away, or from Querétaro, about 50 km away. The historic centre has narrow, hilly cobbled streets, no traffic signals and no fast-food restaurants, so walking is the easiest way to see it. A day trip to the Sanctuary of Atotonilco, about 14 km north, is an easy add-on. The climate is temperate, with rain mostly in summer. Holy Week and the feast of Saint Michael on 29 September bring the town's main processions.
