Laguna Bacalar

Laguna Bacalar

Laguna Bacalar is a freshwater lagoon in southern Quintana Roo, Mexico, known for its layered blues and its small lakeside town.

Laguna Bacalar is a freshwater lagoon in southern Quintana Roo, Mexico, close to the border with Belize. Its water shows several shades of blue and green, which change with depth, sunlight and the pale lagoon floor. The town of Bacalar sits on the shore, and the Fuerte San Felipe, a colonial-era fort, stands by the water. Living microbial mats called stromatolites grow in parts of the lagoon. They are protected, so swimmers are asked to keep off them.

The lagoon suits travelers who want to slow down: swimming from the shore or a dock, kayaking, boat trips out on the water, and simple places to eat and sleep in town. Two or three nights gives time for a swim, a boat trip and a walk through town. The drier months are the easier time to visit, when rain is less frequent. Chetumal is the nearest larger city and the closer base for reaching the lagoon. Tulum is a longer drive away.

Laguna Bacalar in five

  1. Protect the stromatolitesLiving stromatolites grow along the shore. Local rules ask visitors not to stand on them and not to wear sunscreen or repellent in the water, so shower first and follow the guide's instructions.
  2. Book a morning boat tripThe water looks bluest in full sun, and mornings are calmer and quieter. Tours usually run 2 to 3 hours and stop at spots such as the Pirate Channel; ask what is included before you pay.
  3. Reach it by bus or road, not a short hopChetumal is about 40 minutes away, Tulum about 3 hours and Cancún roughly 4.5 to 5 hours by road. ADO buses link them; check where the bus drops you relative to your hotel.
  4. Pick a stay with lagoon accessA hotel with a dock or swim area beats a pool for this trip. Ask whether the shore is sandy or rocky, since entry points differ along the lagoon.

Laguna Bacalar FAQ

Is Laguna Bacalar worth visiting?

Yes if you want a calm freshwater lagoon with sailboats and kayaks. It is not a surf beach or a ruins town, so it suits a relaxed one or two nights.

How do you get to Bacalar from Cancún?

By ADO bus or car, roughly 4.5 to 5 hours. Most visitors go via Tulum and then south on Highway 307. Check the Tren Maya route if you want to ride the train.

Can you swim in Laguna Bacalar?

Yes, but follow the rules about stromatolites and sunscreen. Some shores are rocky, so water shoes help. Ask your hotel where the best entry point is.

How many days do you need in Bacalar?

One or two nights is enough for a boat trip, a swim and a sunset. Add a night if you want to use it as a base for Chetumal or the southern coast.

What is the best time to visit Bacalar?

November to May is drier and clearer, with the lagoon at its bluest on sunny days. June to October is wetter and humid, with more storm risk, but also fewer visitors.
