Teotitlán del Valle

Teotitlán del Valle

Teotitlán del Valle is a Zapotec village about 30 kilometers east of Oaxaca City, where families weave wool rugs and dye yarn with plants and cochineal.

Teotitlán del Valle is a Zapotec village in the Valles Centrales of Oaxaca State, about 30 kilometers east of Oaxaca City. The village is known for wool rugs. Many weavers dye their yarn with plants and with cochineal, a red dye made from insects that feed on prickly pear cactus. Visitors can see yarn being spun and woven in family workshops, though it is best to ask before photographing people at work.

It works as a day trip from Oaxaca City and pairs with other valley stops. The Sunday market in Tlacolula draws shoppers from nearby villages. Hierve el Agua, a set of mineral rock formations, lies farther into the mountains on a longer, rougher drive. November to April is the drier season and the easier time to walk between stops. Staying overnight in Oaxaca City gives more time for dinner and more transport choices the next morning.

Teotitlán del Valle in five

  1. Visit a family workshop to see the dyesMany weaving families show carding, spinning and dyes made from cochineal, indigo and plants. Ask to see the process before you look at prices.
  2. Ask whether a rug is natural dyeNatural-dye rugs take longer and cost more than chemical-dye ones. Ask who wove the piece and how long it took, and do not feel pushed to buy on the first visit.
  3. Take a shared van or taxi from Oaxaca CityThe village is roughly 40 minutes east of the city. Shared vans and taxis make it easy, and a tour adds other stops on the same road.Oaxaca City
  4. Pair it with the Tlacolula market on SundayThe big regional market is in nearby Tlacolula on Sundays, so that day fits both. Workshops may be quieter on market days.
  5. Carry pesos for small purchasesSmall workshops and food stalls may not take cards, so bring cash. Allow half a day for the village and a long lunch.

Teotitlán del Valle FAQ

Is Teotitlán del Valle worth visiting?

Yes if you like crafts and want to see how a rug is made. The village is small and the visit short, so combine it with Tlacolula or a tour rather than making it a full day.

How do you get to Teotitlán del Valle from Oaxaca?

By shared van or taxi, about 40 minutes each way, or on a tour that stops at several valley villages. Ask your hotel about the return so you are not stranded late.

Are Teotitlán rugs made with natural dyes?

Some are, and some use chemical dyes. Ask the weaver to show the dye materials and how long the rug took, and compare two workshops before you buy.

How much time do you need in Teotitlán del Valle?

Half a day is enough for a workshop visit, a short walk and lunch. Add Tlacolula or Hierve el Agua and it becomes a full day.

What is the best day to visit Teotitlán del Valle?

A weekday morning gives the quietest workshops. Sundays pair well with the Tlacolula market, though that road is busier, and November adds Day of the Dead crowds across the valley.
