Ixtapa is a planned resort city on Mexico's Pacific coast, in the state of Guerrero. It lies in the municipality of Zihuatanejo de Azueta, about 5 km northwest of the town of Zihuatanejo and about 245 km northwest of Acapulco. The resort was built in the early 1970s on land that had been a coconut plantation and a mangrove estuary. Its master plan, by architects Agustín and Enrique Landa Verdugo, lays out large, irregular blocks split by fast roads, with quiet dead-end streets inside each block.
Ixtapa was one of the first two coastal tourist destinations financed by a Bank of Mexico program set up in 1968. Cancún was the other. Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International Airport sits inside the resort, so flights from Mexico City, other Mexican cities, and the United States and Canada land close to the hotels. Isla Ixtapa, an island near the resort, is a nearby place to visit. Zihuatanejo, the older town next door, is a short distance away. The drier months, roughly November through April, are the best time for a beach trip. Ixtapa suits travelers who want a resort base with a fishing town within reach.
