Indonesia is a large island country in Southeast Asia, lying between the Indian and Pacific oceans. It is the world's largest archipelagic state, and its main islands are Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi, Borneo (Kalimantan) and New Guinea (Papua). Jakarta, on Java, is the current capital. Most international visitors go to Bali first, where Hindu customs, temple festivals and gamelan music shape daily life. Many travelers then go to Java to see Borobudur and Prambanan, two temple complexes built between the 8th and 10th centuries.
Distances are long. Sea and air links connect the islands, and roads within each island are slow, so trips work best with fewer bases and more time on each one. The climate is tropical and humid year-round. The drier season runs roughly from May to October, though timing varies by region. Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, with about 400 volcanoes, so earthquakes, volcanic activity and tsunamis are real hazards to check before you travel.
Five things to know before Indonesia
- Buy the e-VoA before you fly
Many passports qualify for a visa on arrival, which you can buy online in advance as an e-VoA. It suits short tourist stays; check length of stay and fee on the official immigration site only. Bali entry guide
- Pay the Bali tourist levy
Foreign visitors to Bali pay a one-off levy per visit, on the official Love Bali site or on arrival. Keep the receipt on your phone. Bali
- Do the arrival declaration online
Indonesia uses an online arrival declaration for customs and health. Fill it in shortly before you fly; the QR code speeds up the airport.
- Plan around traffic, not distance
Canggu to Ubud is about 30 km and can take 1.5 hours. For temple days, hire a driver rather than stringing together short rides.
- Bring a sarong for temples
A sarong and sash are required inside temples. Most lend or rent them at the gate, but your own is cleaner.

Indonesia FAQ
How long can I stay on a visa on arrival?
A visa on arrival suits a short tourist stay and can be extended once at an immigration office. Check the current length and fee on the official immigration site before you travel; the Bali entry guide links the right pages.
When is the dry season in Bali?
Roughly April to October. July and August are the busiest, while May, June and September balance dry weather with lighter crowds.
Is Bali the only island worth it?
No. Lombok is a short flight or fast boat away, and Java has Borobudur and Yogyakarta, a short flight from Bali.
How many islands can you see in two weeks?
Two or three: Bali plus Java or Lombok, or Bali plus Komodo. Flights are cheap but airport time and slow roads add up, so avoid changing base every two days.
Is Indonesia safe for tourists?
Most visitor areas are, and the main risks are road traffic, scooter accidents, rip currents and volcano or earthquake activity. Check your government's travel advice, wear a helmet and use licensed boats.
