Komodo National Park

Go for Komodo dragons on land and reef dives at sea, with boats from Labuan Bajo on Flores, the main gateway to the park.

Komodo National Park lies in Indonesia's Lesser Sunda Islands, between Flores and Sumbawa, in East Nusa Tenggara province. Three large islands, Komodo, Rinca and Padar, lie among about 26 smaller islands and the surrounding sea, and the marine zone makes up about 60% of the park. The park was founded in 1980 mainly to protect the Komodo dragon, the world's largest lizard, and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991.

The park is known for its dragons on Komodo and Rinca, where rangers lead visitors on the trails, and for its reefs in the Coral Triangle, where visitors may see manta rays, whale sharks and pygmy seahorses. Labuan Bajo on Flores is the main gateway, and tourist boats depart from there. The dry season runs from May to October, when temperatures can reach about 40 °C. Keep a safe distance from the dragons, and check park rules before you book.

Rules for Komodo National Park, checked

  • Keep to marked trails and walk with a park ranger. Komodo dragons can bite, and their saliva carries many bacteria, so keep a safe distance.
  • Stay out of core zones, which are closed to visitors. Limited nature tourism is allowed in the other zones.
  • Blast and cyanide fishing are illegal and have damaged the reefs. Do not join them or book trips that use them.
  • Check the current entry fee, zone status and boat rules with the park management office in West Flores before you travel.
  • Check Indonesia's entry requirements for your nationality with the Directorate General of Immigration before you travel.

Komodo National Park FAQ

Can I visit Komodo National Park without a tour?

You still need a boat from Labuan Bajo and a park ticket arranged in advance. Most visitors join a day boat or liveaboard that arranges both.

Are Komodo dragons dangerous?

They can be. Treks are led by rangers with forked sticks, and you should stay with the group and never approach the animals.

How many days do I need for Komodo?

One full day by boat covers Padar, a dragon trek and a snorkel stop. Two or three days on a liveaboard add dive sites and quieter bays.

When is the best time to visit Komodo?

April to June and September, when it is dry and the seas are calm. July and August are busiest; December to March is wet with rougher crossings.

How do I get to Komodo from Bali?

Fly from Denpasar to Labuan Bajo, a short flight of roughly 1 to 1.5 hours, then join a boat from the harbor. There is no road route, so allow a night in Labuan Bajo.
