Papua is Indonesia's easternmost province, on the western half of the island of New Guinea. Most travelers go for two places. The Baliem Valley is a highland valley where the Dani people have farmed for generations, and Wamena is its main town. Jayapura, the provincial capital on the north coast, is the other base. Getting between them and reaching villages takes small planes, boats or long walks, and highland flights can be delayed or canceled in bad weather.
This trip suits travelers who can handle basic lodging and long travel days. Plan spare days, since weather and schedule changes can shift the whole route. Check your government's current travel advice before you book, because security in parts of the region can change quickly. A focused Baliem visit needs several days, and adding the coast means a week or more.

- Fly to Jayapura or Wamena, with buffer daysFlights are the only practical way in, and weather and security can delay them for days. Do not tie a Papua trip to a fixed international flight on the same day.
- Book the Baliem Valley through a local operatorA local guide arranges transport, village visits and the right introductions. Confirm current permit rules and which districts are open before you pay.
- Ask before you photographVillages and ceremonies are not tourist stages. Ask first, agree any fee in advance, and follow your guide's lead on customs and dress.
- Carry cash, cover and a plan BCash machines are rare outside Jayapura, and medical care in the highlands is basic. Check evacuation cover, and share your route with someone at home.Travel insurance guides

Is it safe to travel to Papua?
Conditions vary by area and can change quickly. The UK government warns of armed separatist violence, especially in Highland Papua and Central Papua. Check your own government's current advice and ask local operators before you book.
Do you need a permit to visit Papua?
Rules on permits and open districts have changed over time. Ask your local operator and check official sources shortly before you travel, since requirements can differ by district.
How do you get to the Baliem Valley?
By domestic flight to Wamena, usually via Jayapura. Flights can be delayed by weather, so plan buffer days and avoid tight onward connections.
When is the best time to visit Papua?
Roughly July to October is drier, with fewer weather delays. The highlands can see rain in any month, and the north coast is wetter from December to April.
Is Papua the same as Raja Ampat?
Raja Ampat is in West Papua, a neighboring province with a separate access route through Sorong. It is the easier and more visited part of the Papua region.
