Sorong is a port city on the Bird's Head peninsula of West Papua, the Indonesian province on the western half of New Guinea. Most travelers to Raja Ampat, the island group off the peninsula's western coast known for coral reefs, reef fish and diving, fly into Sorong and continue from there. The city has an airport and a ferry terminal, so it works as the usual starting point rather than the destination.
Plan for a short stay. Allow one night in Sorong so you can catch a morning ferry or a pre-booked boat, then spend the rest of the trip on the water. Waisai, the Raja Ampat district capital, is reached by boat or ferry from Sorong. Sea conditions change with the season, so check the forecast with your boat operator before you book. Raja Ampat has few ATMs, so draw enough cash in Sorong before you cross.
Sorong in five
- Fly in a day early for the Raja Ampat boatsFerries and resort boats to Waisai and the islands leave on set schedules, and flights into Sorong often land after the last crossing. Plan a night in town and confirm departure times with your homestay or dive operator.Raja Ampat Islands
- Sort the Raja Ampat entry tag before you crossVisitors to the marine park need an entry tag, normally bought through your operator or at an official counter. Check the current price and validity when you book, and keep the tag with you for checks on the water.
- Draw cash in Sorong, not on the islandsATMs on Waigeo and the smaller islands are few and often empty, and many homestays take cash only. Withdraw at a bank branch in Sorong and carry small notes for boats and meals.Money in Indonesia
- Expect thin signal beyond townCoverage fades quickly outside Sorong and Waisai, and most homestays have no wifi. Download maps, tickets and your ferry confirmation before you board.eSIMs and connectivity
- Skip a long stay in Sorong itselfSorong is a working port and oil-and-gas town with little to see beyond the waterfront and markets. Spend the spare days on the islands or add the wider Bird's Head coast.West Papua

How do you get from Sorong to Raja Ampat?
Take a ferry or a pre-booked resort or homestay boat from Sorong harbor to Waisai on Waigeo, then onward by small boat. Timetables change, so confirm the day before and keep your tag and ID handy.
Do you need to sleep in Sorong before Raja Ampat?
Usually yes, once. Flights tend to land after the last crossing of the day, and a night in town leaves a margin for delayed planes before a pre-paid boat.
What is there to do in Sorong?
Not much: a waterfront, local markets and seafood grills. It works as a transit stop, and the reefs and viewpoints of Raja Ampat are the reason to come.
Is Sorong safe for tourists?
Sorong handles steady tourist traffic bound for Raja Ampat, but conditions differ across the Papua provinces. Read your government's travel advice and ask your operator about current local conditions before booking.
When is the best time for Raja Ampat via Sorong?
Seas are generally calmer from about October to April, which suits ferry crossings and diving. June to August can bring rougher water, so allow slack days on either side.
