West Papua is an Indonesian province covering the western part of the island of New Guinea. It spans several separate destinations rather than one city. Manokwari, the capital, sits on the north coast. The Bird's Head peninsula, Kepala Burung in Indonesian, forms the western tip of the island. Sorong, on that peninsula, is the main city and the usual starting point for Raja Ampat, a group of islands off the peninsula's coast. Birders go to the Arfak mountains near Manokwari. Cenderawasih Bay, on the northern coast, is a separate destination from Raja Ampat.
The region suits travelers who are comfortable with remote logistics, small flights, boats and long travel days. Divers head for Raja Ampat, and birders head for the Arfak hills. Check sea and weather conditions for your dates, and build spare days into the plan, since moving between Sorong, the islands and the interior can be slow.

How do you get to Raja Ampat from Sorong?
Boats run from Sorong to Waisai, and from there you transfer to a lodge or liveaboard. Some visitors take a flight to Waisai when one is scheduled. Confirm times with your lodge, since boats depend on sea conditions.
Is Sorong worth visiting or is it just a transit stop?
Sorong is mainly a gateway, with basic shops, banks and eateries. Spend a night if you need to change flights or boats, but plan your longer stay around Raja Ampat.
Do you need cash in West Papua?
Yes, for guesthouses, small boats and island shops. Withdraw rupiah in Sorong before you leave town, since ATMs on the islands may be few or none.
Is there mobile signal in Raja Ampat?
Signal can be weak on remote islands. Buy a Telkomsel SIM or eSIM before you go and download offline maps for the boat days.
How many days do you need in Sorong and Raja Ampat?
Plan at least a few days on the islands, since boat transfers take time. One night in Sorong covers arrival or departure, and a longer stay suits diving and island hopping.
When is the best time to visit West Papua?
Sea and weather conditions change through the year, so check them for your dates before you book. Ask your lodge or boat operator about conditions for the months you plan to travel.
