Manado is the capital of North Sulawesi province, on the northern tip of Sulawesi island in Indonesia. The city faces Manado Bay with mountains behind it and is Sulawesi's second-largest city after Makassar, with about 460,000 residents. Most residents are Minahasa people. About 68% are Christian and about 31% are Muslim, and small Buddhist, Hindu and Confucian communities also live in the city.
Most visitors come for Bunaken. Bunaken National Park has coral reefs and islands about 8 km offshore, reached by boat in roughly half an hour to two hours from the city. Scuba diving and snorkeling are popular in the reefs. In town, you can see Ban Hin Kiong, the city's oldest temple, and try woku, a spice paste of chili, turmeric, ginger and lemongrass, or babi putar, a whole pig roasted over embers. The climate stays between about 24 and 27°C year round with no real dry season: August is the driest month and January is among the wettest.

- Eat Minahasan food, with care for spiceManado dishes use chili, lemongrass and coconut, and rica-rica is a famous spicy style. Try tinutuan, the vegetable porridge, and ask for less chili if you are unsure.
- Add a highland dayTomohon and Lake Tondano, an hour or so inland, are cooler, with markets and viewpoints. Be aware that some local markets sell wild-animal meat, which can be hard for some visitors to see.

Is Manado worth visiting?
For diving and wildlife, yes. Bunaken, Lembeh and Tangkoko are the draw, and the city itself is a practical base with good food. Non-divers can still do snorkeling and highland days.
How many days do you need in Manado?
Three to five days covers Bunaken, Tangkoko and a highland day. Divers often stay a week with Lembeh added. Allow a night before an early flight.
When is the best time to dive Bunaken and Lembeh?
Roughly June to October, when seas are calm and visibility is good. Wet months can bring rougher water and rain, but diving continues.
Do you need to book Bunaken in advance?
Boats run daily, but dive resorts and the best boats can fill in July and August. Book your resort and dives early in peak season.
Is Manado food very spicy?
Often. Rica-rica and sambal are common, but many dishes are mild. Ask for less chili, and try tinutuan if you want a gentle local breakfast.
