Sulawesi is an island in eastern Indonesia, lying between Borneo and the Maluku islands. Its four long peninsulas give it an orchid-like outline, and each arm has its own landscape. Tana Toraja, in the south, is known for highland villages, carved tongkonan houses and funeral ceremonies that can run for several days. Bunaken, a marine park off Manado in the north, is the island's main dive destination, with coral walls close to shore. Makassar, in the southwest, is the largest city and the main air gateway.
The distances are large. Getting between the south and the north takes most of a day once transfers are counted, so most trips use one region as the base and add the other only if time allows. The dry season, roughly May to October, is the better time for roads and boat trips than the wet months. Choose the region that matches your interest first, then check how the cities connect before you book internal flights.
Sulawesi in five
- Pick a south or north trip, not bothMakassar and the Torajan highlands in the south, or Manado with Bunaken and Tangkoko in the north, each fill a week. Linking them costs a flight and a day, so treat them as separate trips.South Sulawesi
- Book Toraja with a local guideFuneral ceremonies, cliff graves and tongkonan villages make more sense with a guide who knows the families. Go in the drier months and ask about etiquette before you arrive.Tana Toraja
- Choose Manado for diving and wildlifeManado is the gateway to Bunaken marine park by boat and to the tarsier reserve at Tangkoko by road. Both work from a base in or near the city.Manado
- Fly between regionsDistances are huge, roads are slow and a bus from Makassar to the north would take days. Use domestic flights and book the connection with a margin.Getting around Indonesia
- Treat remote islands as expeditionsTogean, Wakatobi and the Banggai islands need extra flights, boats and days. Check the schedule and your cover before building them into a route.Travel insurance

Rules for Sulawesi, checked
- Check Indonesia's entry rules, including passport validity and whether you need a visa, on the immigration site before you fly.
- Remove your shoes before entering mosques and many village houses, and dress modestly; women are often asked to cover their hair.
- At Toraja funerals and village ceremonies, ask before you photograph people, and follow your guide's instructions on where to stand.
- Do not touch, stand on or collect coral in Bunaken Marine Park, and check the current park rules with your dive operator.

How many days do you need in Sulawesi?
Seven to ten days for one end of the island, either Makassar and Toraja or Manado and Bunaken. Two weeks lets you add flights between them, with no time for the far-flung islands.
Is Sulawesi better than Bali for a second trip?
It is quieter and more cultural, with fewer resorts and longer transfers. If you want guided beaches and spa days, stay in Bali; if you want ceremony and reefs, choose Sulawesi.
What is the best base for Sulawesi diving?
Manado for Bunaken marine park and day boats, or the remote islands for liveaboards and long trips. Make sure the operator is reputable and your cover includes diving.
Is it easy to travel around Sulawesi on your own?
Yes in towns and along the main highways, but distances are long and buses are slow. Use flights between regions and a driver in the highlands.
When is the best time to visit Sulawesi?
Roughly May to September for the south and for Toraja; the north has a similar dry window, though showers come earlier. The rainy season runs from about December to March.
