South Sulawesi is a province on the southern peninsula of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Makassar is its capital and largest city, with nearly 1.5 million people in 2025. The province borders the Makassar Strait to the west, the Gulf of Bone to the east and the Flores Sea to the south. Limestone hills around Maros, about 30 km northeast of Makassar, hold caves. In Pettakere cave, handprint paintings are estimated at 35,000 to 40,000 years old.

From the 15th to the 19th centuries, the spice trade made the region the gateway to the Maluku Islands. Its two leading historic kingdoms were Gowa, around Makassar, and Bone, a Bugis kingdom. In the north, the Torajan highlands are known for tongkonan houses with boat-shaped roofs. The trip suits travelers who come for history and culture rather than beach time. The dry season runs roughly from May to October.
