North Sulawesi is an Indonesian province mostly on the Minahasa Peninsula of Sulawesi island, with small archipelagos to the north between Sulawesi and the southern Philippines. Manado is the capital, the largest city and the main gateway. Tomohon and Bitung are the major towns in the northern Minahasa half. Most travelers come for the sea and the volcanoes: Bunaken's coral reefs, the Mount Lokon and Mount Mahawu highlands above Tomohon, and Lake Tondano, which covers about 4,278 hectares.
Bitung City Nature Reserve is home to tarsiers, and the forests hold anoa and maleo. The rare coelacanth lives off the coast of Manado. The province is a young volcanic region, and earthquakes and eruptions can occasionally disrupt travel. The drier months run from May to October; on the north coast the rainy season runs from November to April. Indonesian is the official language, Manado Malay is the everyday lingua franca, and English is understood in tourism areas such as Bunaken National Park.
North Sulawesi in five
- Fly into Manado and pick one baseSam Ratulangi airport serves Manado, usually with a connection via Jakarta or another hub. Bunaken is a short boat from the city; Lembeh and Tangkoko lie on the Bitung side, 1.5–2 hours by road.Manado
- Choose Bunaken for walls, Lembeh for small lifeBunaken is big-reef diving and snorkeling with steep walls. Lembeh is black-sand muck diving with tiny, odd creatures. Many divers do both across a week.
- Go to Tangkoko with a local guideDawn is best for crested macaques and tarsiers in the reserve, usually with a local guide. Confirm entry rules and timing locally, and keep your distance from the animals.
- Bring your dive card and coverOperators ask for a certification card and dive logbook, and some check insurance. Make sure your policy covers diving to your depth before you book.Travel insurance guides
- Add the Minahasa highlands for a nightCooler highland towns and lakes lie inland from Manado, and a driver can link them in a day. They are a break from diving and a cooler change from the coast.Sulawesi

How many days do you need in North Sulawesi?
Four days covers Bunaken plus one other stop; seven days allows Bunaken, Lembeh and Tangkoko without rushing. Add a day for the highlands if you want a break from the water.
Is North Sulawesi worth visiting for diving?
Yes, particularly for Bunaken's reef walls and Lembeh's muck diving. If you only want beaches, other regions of Indonesia suit better.
How do you get to North Sulawesi?
Fly to Manado's Sam Ratulangi airport, usually via Jakarta or another domestic hub. Check current routes and baggage rules for dive gear when you book.
When is the best time to dive in North Sulawesi?
Roughly June to October for calmer seas and clearer water, though diving runs through the year. Wet-season swells can cancel boats, so keep spare days.
Can you see wildlife in North Sulawesi besides diving?
Yes. Tangkoko is known for crested macaques and tarsiers, best at dawn with a local guide. Check entry rules and guide requirements locally before you go.
