Tana Toraja sits in the hill country of South Sulawesi, Indonesia, roughly 300 km north of Makassar, the provincial capital. The mountain regency is home to the Toraja people. Makale is the government seat, and Rantepao is the traditional center of Toraja culture. Elevations range from about 150 m to about 3,083 m above sea level.
Visitors come for Toraja funerals, which usually draw hundreds of people and can last several days. Toraja woodcarving and funeral rituals are the region's best-known features, and tongkonan are the traditional houses found in the villages. At Lemo, coffins are kept in the open air in the middle of steep rock faces. At Kambira, the graves of babies who have not yet grown teeth are placed inside a hollowed-out living tree. Rice terraces and hillside villages surround Rantepao and Makale. Since 1984, the national Ministry of Tourism has named Tana Toraja Indonesia's second tourist destination after Bali.

When is the best time to see a Toraja funeral?
Ceremonies are often held in the drier months, roughly June to September, but dates depend on each family. Ask a local guide to find out what is on while you are there.
Is it respectful to attend a Torajan funeral as a tourist?
Yes, with a guide and an invitation. Dress in dark, modest clothes, follow your guide on gifts, and ask before taking photos. Treat it as a family occasion, not a show.
How many days do you need in Tana Toraja?
Three days covers the main villages and graves; four lets you add Batutumonga or a coffee farm. Add a day each way for the road from Makassar.
How do you get from Makassar to Tana Toraja?
By overnight bus or a driver in about 8 hours, or by air if flights run to the highland airport on your dates. Check schedules before you plan around them.
Is Tana Toraja good for hiking?
Yes. Rice terraces and villages connect by footpaths, and guides lead short walks from Batutumonga or between hamlets. Paths are muddy in the wet months, so bring shoes with grip.
