Sanur is a beach area on Bali's southeast coast, about 10 to 15 km east of Denpasar. Ngurah Rai International Airport is roughly a 30-minute drive away. Sanur is Bali's oldest beach tourism destination, starting before Kuta, Nusa Dua and Uluwatu, and it has grown into a small town of its own. Hotels, villa resorts, restaurants, cafés and art shops line the coastal area.
Sanur is known for sunrise views, while Kuta is better known for sunsets. A paved path runs south along the beach past Sindu, Karang and Semawang beaches, and locals and visitors use it for jogging. The calm waves are unsuitable for surfing, but diving and snorkeling spots lie nearby. Traditional fishing boats on the beach give views of Nusa Penida. The dry season, roughly April to October, is the usual time for beach days, and a few days covers the beach, Museum Le Mayeur and a temple.
Sanur in five
- Walk the beachfront path at sunriseThe paved path runs along the beach with cafes and temples, and the east-facing sand is quiet before 8am. Bring a hat; the sun is strong by mid-morning.
- Check the tide before you swimThe reef flat leaves shallow water at low tide, and boats beach alongside the swimmers. Ask your hotel for tide times and choose a stretch with lifeguards if you have children.
- Sleep in Sanur the night before a boatFast boats to Penida and Lembongan leave from the harbor area early. Staying here beats a long pre-dawn transfer, and hotels will arrange a pickup. How to get to Nusa Penida
- Rent a bike for the flat pathsSanur is flat and bike-friendly along the front, and a bicycle is cheaper than a scooter. Stay on the path, which is shared with pedestrians, and lock the bike when you swim.
- Use Sanur as a quiet base, not a nightlife stopBars close earlier than in Seminyak, so it works for early starts and families. For beach clubs and dinner scenes, add a night in Seminyak.Seminyak

Is Sanur worth visiting?
Yes for a calm beach, a flat walking path and easy boats to the Nusa islands. It is not for big nightlife or surf, and its tone is closer to a seaside town than a party strip.
Is Sanur or Seminyak better?
Sanur for families, calm water and early boats. Seminyak for beach clubs, restaurants and a livelier scene. Many trips combine both, with a night in Sanur before a boat.
Can you swim in Sanur?
Yes at high tide, in the reef-protected water. At low tide the water is shallow and rocky in places. Ask about tides and wear water shoes if you plan to wade.
How far is Sanur from the airport?
About 25–40 minutes by road, depending on traffic. It is one of the closest beach areas, which suits late arrivals and early departures.
How do you get from Sanur to Nusa Penida?
By fast boat from the Sanur beachfront, usually 30–45 minutes. Buy a flexible return ticket, arrive early and check which harbor you land at on the island.
