Nusa Lembongan

A small island off Bali's southeast coast, reached by fast boat from Sanur and known for reef snorkeling, calm bays and seaweed farms in the shallows.

Nusa Lembongan is a small island off Bali's southeast coast in Indonesia. Fast boats run from Sanur on the mainland, and the crossing is the usual way in. Mushroom Bay on the west coast and Jungut Batu on the south coast are the main places to stay. The Yellow Bridge links the island to the smaller Nusa Ceningan, and mangroves and seaweed farms line parts of the shore.

Go for reef snorkeling, slow beach days and a quieter pace than Bali's main resort towns. Seaweed farming is still a working trade here, so the farms are part of the view. Compared with Nusa Penida, the larger island next door, Lembongan suits travelers who want beaches and water more than cliff viewpoints. The dry season, roughly April to October, is the calmer period for snorkeling. Plan at least two or three nights, and more if you want most of your days in the water.

Nusa Lembongan in five

  1. Choose Jungut Batu or Mushroom BayJungut Batu is the livelier village strip with sunrise views and the surf and dive shops. Mushroom Bay is a calm cove with beach clubs and resorts, quieter at night and a little further from most boats.
  2. Cross the Yellow Bridge on foot or by scooterThe narrow bridge links Lembongan to Nusa Ceningan, and it is shared by walkers and scooters. Go early or late to avoid traffic, and do not stop in the middle for photos.
  3. Bring rupiah from BaliCash machines are few and can run empty. Pay for boats and tours by card before you go if you can, and carry small notes for warungs, scooters and beach entries.Money in Indonesia
  4. Add a Penida day only in calm weatherPenida is a short crossing away, but the roads there are rough. Join a tour rather than renting a scooter, and choose a day with a flat sea.Penida vs Lembongan
  5. Leave slack before flights homeSwell can delay fast boats, especially in the wet season. Sleep on Bali the night before an international flight, preferably in Sanur.Sanur

Nusa Lembongan FAQ

Is Nusa Lembongan worth visiting?

Yes if you want calm beaches, snorkeling and a small-island pace without Penida's rough roads. It is not a big nightlife or sightseeing stop, and a two-night stay is enough for most trips.

Should I stay in Lembongan or Penida?

Lembongan for easier beaches, cafes and a flat island. Penida for the dramatic cliffs and longer days on a tour. Many people sleep on Lembongan and take a Penida boat tour.

How do you get to Nusa Lembongan from Bali?

Mostly by fast boat from Sanur, about 30–45 minutes, with other operators from Bali's south and east coasts. Choose a ticket with a flexible return and ask where the boat lands.

Can you walk around Nusa Lembongan?

Yes in each village, but the island spreads over several kilometers. Most visitors rent a scooter or bicycle, or take a short taxi ride, and avoid midday heat on the roads.

When is the best time to visit Nusa Lembongan?

May to October for calmer seas and clearer snorkeling. December to March can bring swell, rain and cancelled boats, so allow slack before a flight.
