Java is Indonesia's most populous island and where most first-time visitors begin. Jakarta, the capital, sits on the north coast. Most travelers head inland to the monuments of Central Java. Borobudur is a Buddhist temple set among hills, and Prambanan is a Hindu temple complex near Yogyakarta. Yogyakarta is a palace city, where the sultan's kraton still anchors the old center, and it works as a base for both temples.
East of Yogyakarta the land rises into volcanoes. Mount Bromo, in East Java, is the one most travelers come for, usually at sunrise. Bandung, in the cooler western highlands, makes a good first stop out of Jakarta. Distances are long and roads are slow, so choose two or three stops and link them by train. The dry season, roughly May to October, is the most reliable window for clear skies at the volcanoes. Allow at least a week for a first trip.

Read the guideJava FAQ
How many days do you need in Java?
Seven to ten days covers Jakarta, Yogyakarta with Borobudur and Prambanan, and a volcano in East Java. Four days works for Yogyakarta and one more stop. A single stop deserves three nights.
Is it better to take the train or fly in Java?
Trains are comfortable and scenic and suit Jakarta to Bandung or Yogyakarta and Surabaya. Flights save time on the long Jakarta to Surabaya or Bali legs, so mix both and watch for weekend sell-outs.
What is the best time to visit Java?
Roughly May to September, when skies are clearer and volcano views are better. The wet season brings afternoon storms and can cloud Bromo and Ijen, though temples and cities still work.
Is Java worth visiting after Bali?
Yes. Java has the great temples, a living royal culture in Yogyakarta and active volcanoes, with far fewer beach resorts. Many travelers add it for three to five days via a short flight from Bali.
Is Java safe to travel?
Generally yes for tourists, with the usual care for pickpocketing and traffic. Check volcano status before dawn climbs, follow guide and park rules and carry travel insurance.
