Taman Fatahillah
Sight

Taman Fatahillah

Visit Taman Fatahillah in Jakarta’s Old Town for colonial-era buildings, several museums and a lively square with cafes, street food and evening lights.

Taman Fatahillah is the central square of Jakarta’s Old Town, surrounded by Dutch colonial buildings that now house museums, including the Jakarta History Museum, Wayang Museum and Fine Art and Ceramic Museum. Come to see the historic architecture, walk the open plaza and browse a museum or two. In the late afternoon, the square grows lively with performers, cafes and street food; after dark, its lights add a different feel. You can also ride a bicycle around the square, with lit-up bikes available at night.

Taman Fatahillah

Taman Fatahillah is the central square of Jakarta’s Old Town, also known as Kota Tua. It was once the centre of Batavia and was called Stadhuis Plein during Dutch rule. The surrounding colonial buildings include the former town hall, now home to the Jakarta History Museum.

The plaza is a place to walk between the museums, look at the architecture and take a break at a nearby cafe or food stall. The buildings around it have been repurposed for museums, so the square works well as a starting point for exploring Old Town.

Bicycles are another way to explore the plaza. Some are lit up at night, when the square and its surrounding buildings are illuminated. Late afternoon is a good time to arrive if you want to see the area shift into its livelier evening scene, with performers, cafes and street food nearby.
