Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia and the largest city on the island of Java, on its northwest coast. It is also the main international air gateway to Indonesia, served by Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. The city grew out of Batavia, a Dutch trading port, and Kota Tua, the Old Town, still has colonial-era buildings, squares and museums from that time. Modern towers stand a short walk away from them.
Visitors come for Old Town, the National Monument (Monas) and its park in Merdeka Square, the museums, and street food, which is strongest at evening stalls and warungs. The city suits a short stop, or a first night before going on to other parts of Java. Traffic is heavy, so where you stay affects how much you can see in a day. Plan one or two nights, and more if you add trips out of the city. The drier months, roughly June to September, are the easiest for walking outdoors.

- Sort your e-VoA before Soekarno-HattaMost visitors land at Soekarno-Hatta (CGK). If your passport needs a visa on arrival, buy the e-VoA online before you fly rather than at a counter after a long flight.e-VoA and the Bali levy
- Use rail, not a taxi, at rush hourTraffic can turn a short ride into an hour or more. The MRT runs along the Sudirman and Thamrin axis and an airport train links Soekarno-Hatta with the center, so plan around rail where the route fits.Getting around Indonesia
- Base in Menteng or SudirmanMenteng is leafy and calm with cafés and the Jakarta Cathedral and Istiqlal Mosque area nearby; Sudirman and Thamrin put you on the MRT line. The old town is for a morning visit, not a night.Where to stay in Jakarta
- See Kota Tua in the morningFatahillah Square, the Jakarta History Museum and the harbor of Sunda Kelapa are best before the heat and the crowds. Pair it with the National Monument in the afternoon.Jakarta in 2 days
- Order rides in an app, and set the pickup carefullyRide-hailing apps such as Grab and Gojek show a price up front. Malls and stations often have a marked pickup zone, so confirm it with the driver before you walk.

Rules for Jakarta, checked
- Check Indonesia's entry requirements with the Directorate General of Immigration before you fly. Visa and entry rules change, so use the official site.Source
- Indonesia has strict drug laws. Penalties for possession and trafficking are severe and can include long prison terms or the death penalty.
- Dress modestly and take off your shoes before you enter a mosque or a temple. Ask before you photograph people at prayer.
- Give and take money, food and documents with your right hand. The left hand is considered impolite in Indonesian custom.
Jakarta FAQ
Is Jakarta worth visiting?
For one or two nights, yes: the Old Town, the National Museum, mosques and food are strong, and it connects every part of Indonesia. It is not a beach or temple destination, so most people use it as a start or stopover before Yogyakarta or Bali.
How many days do you need in Jakarta?
Two days covers Kota Tua, the National Monument and a museum or mall evening. A layover day works if you leave the airport early and avoid rush hour. Add a day for the Thousand Islands or Bogor.
Where should I stay in Jakarta?
Menteng for calm streets and museums, or Sudirman and Thamrin for the MRT and malls. Choose Kota Tua only for early sightseeing, and an airport hotel only for a late flight or a dawn departure.
Is Jakarta safe for tourists?
Most visitors have no trouble, but watch for phone snatching and pickpockets in crowds and on packed trains. Use ride-hailing at night, keep bags in front of you and check your government's travel advice before you go.
How do I get from Soekarno-Hatta Airport to central Jakarta?
Take the airport train to the center, a taxi or a ride-hailing car. Allow about an hour or more in traffic, and book a car early if you land in the evening rush.
