Bandung is the capital of West Java province, on the western highlands of Java, about 141 km southeast of Jakarta. The city sits in a basin ringed by volcanic mountains, and its cooler climate has long drawn people from the capital for weekend stays. Dutch colonial builders left many tropical Art Deco buildings, and the city's Dutch-era fashion shops and boulevards earned it the nickname the Paris of Java.
Most visitors come for the old boulevards, cheap local fashion, denim and factory outlets, and a food scene built on Sundanese dishes and snacks such as batagor, siomay and soto Bandung. The Asian-African Conference of 1955 was held here, and its venue, Gedung Merdeka, is now a museum. Tangkuban Perahu, a volcano north of the city, and the Kawah Putih crater lake, about 50 km south, both make day trips. The driest month is usually August, and the wettest is usually March.
Bandung in five
- Take the Whoosh high-speed train from JakartaThe high-speed line links Jakarta's Halim station with Bandung's area in under an hour, with a feeder train or shuttle into town. Check the operator's timetable and the station you need before booking.Jakarta
- Visit the volcano sites earlyTangkuban Parahu and the sulfur lake at Kawah Putih are best in the morning, before cloud and traffic build. Check closures, since gas and activity can shut crater areas without notice.
- Avoid weekend and holiday trafficBandung fills with Jakarta visitors on weekends and holidays, and roads to Lembang and Ciwidey jam. Leave early or stay midweek, and use a driver who knows the back routes.
- Base in Dago, the center or LembangDago is hilly with cafes; the center has Braga's heritage streets; Lembang is cooler and rural. Pick the one that matches your plans, since moving between them can take 30 minutes or more.
- Add tea plantations on a half-day loopTea estates around Lembang and Pangalengan offer walks and cool air. Book a driver for the loop, as public transport is slow and signs are limited.

Is Bandung worth visiting?
Yes for cool air, cafes, architecture and volcano day trips, especially as a long weekend from Jakarta. It has fewer headline sights than Yogyakarta, so give it two or three days, not a week.
How do you get from Jakarta to Bandung?
By high-speed train, regular train or toll road. The high-speed train is the fastest on the rail line, with a feeder into central Bandung, and the road trip can take 2 to 4 hours depending on traffic. Check schedules before booking.
How many days do you need in Bandung?
Two days for the city, cafes and heritage streets, three if you add Tangkuban Parahu or Kawah Putih. Add a day for tea plantations and a long lunch in Lembang.
Is Bandung cooler than Jakarta?
Yes. It sits in the highlands, so days are milder and evenings cooler. Pack a light jacket for evenings and rain, since showers are common in the wet months.
Is Tangkuban Parahu safe to visit?
Usually, but the crater areas can close when gas or activity rises. Check the status that morning, go early and follow ranger instructions. Skip it if the sky is overcast and visibility is poor.
