West Java

Bandung's highland air, tea estates and volcano craters make West Java a practical trip from Jakarta.

West Java is the province directly east of Jakarta, on the island of Java. Its capital, Bandung, sits on a highland plateau, so the air is cooler than in Jakarta and the pace is slower. Tea estates climb the hillsides around the city, and volcanic craters rise nearby, with some holding lakes in their bowls. The province is the heartland of Sundanese culture.

Most travelers stay a weekend or a few days, with Bandung as the base for trips out to the craters and tea estates. Plan at least two or three nights so you are not rushing. The drier months, roughly May to September, suit outdoor days best, though the highlands can be cool and misty at any time of year. Come for cooler weather, hiking and a slower pace than Jakarta.

West Java in five

  1. Take the high-speed train from JakartaThe Whoosh line links Jakarta to the Bandung area in well under an hour, with a feeder into town. It beats weekend traffic on the toll road, which can double the trip.Jakarta
  2. Go midweek to avoid Jakarta weekendersBandung and the Puncak road fill on weekends and holidays. A Tuesday or Wednesday gives quieter cafes and viewpoints.Bandung
  3. Check crater access before you driveTangkuban Perahu and Kawah Putih can close or restrict access when gas levels rise. Look up the latest notice before you go, and carry a light jacket for the highland air.
  4. Base in Bandung for the tea hillsBandung gives restaurants, factory outlets and drivers within reach of the Lembang and Ciwidey hills. Rooms in the hills suit those who want views over the city lights.
  5. Add the Thousand Islands for a coast dayA day or two on Pulau Seribu gives sun after the highlands, with boats from Jakarta's north coast.Thousand Islands

By high-speed train, which takes well under an hour to the Bandung area plus a feeder, or by car, which takes about three hours and can be much longer on weekends.

Two days covers Bandung and one crater or tea farm. Four lets you add Garut or the Thousand Islands without rushing.

When is the best time to visit West Java?

May to September is the driest, with clearer views at the craters. The wet months bring cloud and afternoon showers, though the hills stay green.
