Senggigi is a beachfront tourist area on the west coast of Lombok island, in Indonesia's West Nusa Tenggara province. The strip runs several kilometers just north of Mataram, the island's capital, so it suits travelers who want the sea close to the city. The beach lies in Senggigi village, Batu Layar district, West Lombok regency.
For years Senggigi was Lombok's main tourist strip, but Kuta Lombok in the south and the North Western Gili islands now draw more visitors and development. A building boom in the late 1990s stalled after the 2000 communal violence and the 2002 Bali bombing, and some projects were left unfinished. Pura Batu Bolong sits on a rock at the south end of the beach. The Hindu temple has 14 altars and draws worshippers and tourists. Walkers and boat riders can reach a salty waterfall at the far end of Nambung Beach. The beach has parking, toilets, cafés, restaurants and places to stay, and you can rent diving, surfing and fishing gear. Plan a few nights for a beach base and add day trips for the rest.
Senggigi in five
- Check the boat harbor before you bookFast boats from Bali and the Gilis use different harbors around Lombok, and some are far from Senggigi. Confirm the pier and pickup with your operator.Gili Islands
- Choose Senggigi for a quiet base, not the best beachIt has sunset views, restaurants and hotels, but better sand is on the Gilis and in the south. It suits an easy night before or after a flight.South Lombok
- Plan the airport runLombok airport is far from Senggigi, about 1.5–2 hours by road. Book a transfer or taxi in advance, and allow time for traffic around Mataram.
- Dress modestly in villagesLombok is mainly Muslim, so cover up away from the beach and in mosques. Ramadan changes opening hours, and the call to prayer carries across the coast.
- Use Mataram for errands and templesPura Lingsar and the city's markets are 20 minutes away. A driver can combine them with a sunset back on the strip.Mataram

Is Senggigi worth visiting?
As a quiet base for sunsets and easy access to Mataram, yes. If you want the best beaches, snorkeling or nightlife, the Gili Islands and south Lombok are stronger.
How far is Senggigi from Lombok airport?
About 1.5–2 hours by road, depending on traffic. Book a transfer in advance, and allow extra time for roadworks and Mataram traffic.
Can you swim at Senggigi?
Yes in the calmer coves. The beach is not as wide or white as the Gilis, and conditions change, so check local advice and avoid swimming after dark.
Is Senggigi or the Gilis better?
The Gilis for turtles, snorkeling and a car-free feel. Senggigi for a quieter, cheaper base with easy road access. Many travelers split a trip between them.
How do you get from Senggigi to the Gili Islands?
By car to the nearby harbor, then a public boat or a private charter. Confirm the harbor and timing with your hotel, and allow about an hour before the boat.
