Solo, also called Surakarta, is a royal city in Central Java, Indonesia. Its two palace complexes, the Kasunanan and the Mangkunegaran, sit in the old city and are the main reason to come. Nearby batik workshops let you watch cloth being waxed and dyed by hand. Javanese food is easy to find here, from simple warung meals to stalls that open in the evening.

Solo suits travelers who want a smaller base than Yogyakarta, which is one to two hours away by train. The dry months, roughly May to October, are the easiest time to visit. Plan one to two days. A day trip can cover both palaces and a batik village, but an overnight stay leaves time for an evening meal and a slower walk through the old streets near the palaces.

Solo in five

  1. Pair Solo with Yogyakarta by trainCommuter and intercity trains link the two cities in roughly 1–1.5 hours. Many travelers see Solo as a day trip, but staying a night adds food and quiet evenings.Yogyakarta
  2. Check palace hours and dress rulesThe Kasunanan Palace and Mangkunegaran Palace have set visiting hours and dress rules, and parts of the compounds can close for ceremonies. Ask your hotel and confirm on the day.
  3. Buy batik in the villages, not only the marketKauman and Laweyan are batik quarters where workshops show the process. Pasar Klewer is a big textile market, so bargain politely and compare quality first.
  4. Eat Solo's classics in the eveningLocal dishes include nasi liwet, serabi and timlo, often served from street stalls and small restaurants. Evenings are cooler and busier than midday.
  5. Add Sangiran or Sukuh with a driverSangiran is an early-human fossil site north of the city, and Sukuh is a temple on Mount Lawu's slopes. Both are easier by car than by public transport.Semarang
