Tanjung Puting National Park sits in Central Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of Borneo. Most of the park is peat swamp forest, crossed by blackwater rivers that run dark and slow between low trees. Visitors come mainly to see orangutans, which can be spotted along the riverbanks and at feeding sites near the park's rehabilitation camps. Many trips start in Kumai, a port town, and continue inside the park on a klotok, a wooden houseboat with a crew, a cook and a simple cabin.
The klotok is the base for sleeping, eating and moving between river stops, so your days follow the boat's schedule. Before you pay, confirm how many nights the trip covers and what the crew and cook provide. The drier months make trails and riverbanks easier to walk, while the wet months bring higher water. Pangkalan Bun, the nearest town with an airport, is the usual route to Kumai.
Tanjung Puting National Park in five
- Book a klotok with guide, cook and crewMost visitors sleep aboard a klotok on the Sekonyer River, with a guide, cook and captain included. Compare nights, meals and the boat's sleeping setup before you pay.Klotok trip guide
- Plan around the feeding stationsOrangutans are seen at Tanjung Harapan, Pondok Tanggui and Camp Leakey, where rangers put out food at set times. Ask your guide for the day's timetable, and do not expect a sighting every stop.
- Aim for the drier monthsJune to September is the driest window. Rain can fall in any month, and in heavy fruit seasons orangutans may skip the platforms, so allow a spare day if you can.
- Keep your distance and your food out of sightOrangutans can grab bags and snacks, and they can catch human colds. Many operators ask guests who are unwell to skip the trip, so follow your guide's rules.
- Link it with Bukit Lawang or SumatraTanjung Puting and Bukit Lawang offer different orangutan encounters. One is a river trip; the other is a jungle trek, so choose by the style you want.Tanjung Puting or Bukit Lawang

Tanjung Puting National Park FAQ
How many days do you need at Tanjung Puting?
Two nights covers the main feeding stations and Camp Leakey in comfort. A third night adds a slower pace and more river time, while a day trip is rarely enough.
Can you see wild orangutans at Tanjung Puting?
Yes, at feeding stations and along the river, but sightings are never guaranteed. Dry-season trips and an unhurried schedule give the best chance.
What is a klotok?
A wooden river boat with an open upper deck for sleeping and meals. Crew cook on board, and you sleep under a mosquito net, so check the bedding before booking.
Do you need a guide at Tanjung Puting?
Yes. Visits run through a registered operator with a guide, who handles the permit and leads you at the platforms. Check the package details before paying.
Is Tanjung Puting open all year?
Yes, though river conditions change between wet and dry months. June to September is the driest and easiest window, while heavy rain can complicate boat schedules.
