Sumatra is the largest island lying wholly within Indonesia, one of the Sunda Islands in the west of the country. The island runs about 1,790 km diagonally from northwest to southeast. The Indian Ocean borders its west coast, and the Strait of Malacca separates it from the Malay Peninsula. The Bukit Barisan mountains run almost its full length, with several active volcanoes. The equator crosses near the centre.

Travelers come for rainforest, wildlife and volcanic highlands. Lake Toba, the island's best-known lake, fills a caldera left by a supervolcanic eruption about 74,000 years ago. Gunung Leuser, Kerinci Seblat and Bukit Barisan Selatan national parks form a World Heritage rainforest site, home to the critically endangered Sumatran tiger and Sumatran orangutan. The climate is hot and humid, and seasonal smoke haze from forest burning often causes severe air pollution. The island is too large for one trip, so pick one or two regions.

Sumatra in five

  2. See orangutans on a guided jungle trekBukit Lawang and the Gunung Leuser area are known for semi-wild orangutans. Treks run only with licensed guides, and distance rules protect the apes.Bukit Lawang
  3. Allow a full day for Medan to TobaThe road from Medan to Lake Toba is slow and takes several hours. Stay on Samosir island for two nights to make the transfer worthwhile.Danau Toba
  4. Dress and plan for Aceh's rulesAceh applies local religious rules, so dress modestly and expect no public alcohol. Check the current rules before you go.Aceh
  5. Carry rain gear all yearThe west of Sumatra can see rain in any month, and jungle trekking is muddy. Keep electronics in dry bags, and keep a margin for road delays.Travel insurance

    Rules for Sumatra, checked

    • Indonesia's visa and entry rules change, so check the Directorate General of Immigration site (imigrasi.go.id) before you fly.
    • Aceh province applies Islamic law, so dress modestly there and check local regulations on alcohol and public behaviour before you go.
    • Carrying or buying tiger, elephant or orangutan parts is illegal; check what you can take home with Indonesia's customs service (beacukai.go.id).

    Sumatra FAQ

How many days do you need in Sumatra?

Seven to ten days covers Medan, Bukit Lawang and Lake Toba without rushing. Add days for Padang or Aceh, which sit far from the northern loop.

    Is Sumatra worth visiting?

Yes, if you want rainforest, volcanic lakes and fewer crowds than Bali. It takes more planning, and roads are slow, so choose one region rather than the whole island.

Where can you see orangutans in Sumatra?

Bukit Lawang and the Gunung Leuser area, with trekking from the village. Sightings are never guaranteed, so allow two days and book a licensed guide.

How do you get from Medan to Lake Toba?

By car or shared minibus, normally four to five hours to the lake shore, then a boat to Samosir. Check traffic and leave early so you arrive in daylight.

When is the best time to visit Sumatra?

June to August is generally the driest for Medan and the north, though rain can fall in any month. The west coast and the Mentawai islands have their own surf seasons.
