Lovina is a beach area on Bali's northwest coast, in Buleleng Regency, with Singaraja, the regency capital, as the nearest main town. The tourist strip runs roughly 5 to 15 km west of Singaraja through small villages such as Kalibukbuk, Kaliasem and Temukus. Compared with Kuta and the south side of the island, Lovina is much quieter and still fairly natural. The name blends the English word "love" with the Balinese word "ina," meaning mother's love. In 1953, Anak Agung Pandji Tisna, a Regent of Buleleng, opened a small guesthouse on his land under that name.
Dolphin-watching is the main draw. Early-morning boat trips with local fishermen usually last about two hours. Diving and snorkeling are also popular off the coast, and Lovina is one of five Bali sites in the Indonesian Coral Reef Garden restoration project. June to September is the driest stretch, and it suits beach days best. Sundays, public holidays and Balinese holy days bring many local visitors and students to the beach, so expect more people then.
