Kuta is a beach town on the southwest coast of Bali, Indonesia, a short drive from Ngurah Rai International Airport near Denpasar. Its sandy beach faces the Indian Ocean, and the town grew around it into a mix of hotels, cafes, shops and bars. Most first-time visitors come for the beach, the sunsets and the surf.
The main streets, including Jalan Legian, hold most of the shopping and nightlife. Surf lessons and boards are easy to find along the sand. Traffic can be slow in the afternoon, so walking between nearby areas or taking short rides saves time. The dry season, roughly April to October, suits a beach stay best, and May, June, September and October are the strongest months. Plan two to four days for a beach and surf stay, and longer if you want to add day trips across the island.
Kuta in five
- Get a local eSIM before you landGrab and Gojek need mobile data to find a pickup in Kuta's narrow lanes, so set up the eSIM before you land.Phones and eSIM
- Carry rupiah and learn QRISWarungs and beach stalls often take only cash, so carry small rupiah notes. Some shops and cafes also accept QRIS, the national QR payment code, through local e-wallet apps.Money and costs
- Book rides with Grab or GojekBoth apps show the fare before you book, so you skip haggling at the airport exit. Set the pickup pin on the map for a busy street.Getting around
- Swim between the flags on Kuta BeachKuta Beach has strong currents and rip tides, and lifeguards post flags and patrol the central sections. Swim only between the flags and ask the lifeguards about conditions before you go in.
- Carry a sarong and sash for templesMost Bali temples ask visitors to wear a sarong and a sash, and stalls near the temple gates sell or rent them. Keep shoulders and knees covered inside the sacred areas.

Is Kuta worth visiting?
Yes for a beach stay with a lively evening scene, a wide choice of places to eat and a short drive from the airport. It is less suited to quiet holidays; Seminyak to the north and Uluwatu to the south are calmer options.
How many days do you need in Kuta?
Three or four nights covers the beach, the sunset and one day trip. Add nights if you want Ubud or Uluwatu without a long drive back each evening.
Is Kuta safe at night?
The main streets stay busy late. Keep an eye on your drink and bag in bars, and take a ride app home rather than walking back late.
How do you get from the airport to Kuta?
Ngurah Rai airport is a short drive away. Use a ride-hailing app or a pre-booked car, since the drive can be slow in traffic.
Is Kuta Beach good for swimming?
Only in the flagged sections. The currents are strong here, so swim between the flags and check with the lifeguards before you go in.
Kuta or Seminyak, which is better?
Kuta is busier, cheaper and closer to the airport. Seminyak has more upscale restaurants and boutiques and is quieter at night.
