Türkiye

Istanbul's mosques and bazaars, Cappadocia's rock valleys and the Roman ruins of Ephesus make Türkiye a trip of cities, landscapes and coastline.

Türkiye sits mostly in Anatolia, the peninsula in West Asia that lies between the Black Sea, the Aegean and the Mediterranean, with a smaller part, East Thrace, in Southeast Europe. Istanbul is the largest city and the country's economic and cultural center, and it spans both continents, with the Bosphorus dividing its European and Asian sides. Ankara is the capital.

The country is known for Istanbul's mosques and bazaars, the Roman ruins at Ephesus, and the rock valleys of Cappadocia, along with 22 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and a long record of settlement. Göbekli Tepe, near 12,000 years old, is one of the oldest known human-made structures. Trips suit travelers who like history, food and varied landscapes, and most itineraries of one to two weeks pair Istanbul with one region. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons for sightseeing, since Mediterranean and Aegean summers are hot and dry.

Five things to know before Türkiye

  1. Check your passport's entry rule

US, UK, Canadian, Australian, German and Spanish ordinary passports can stay 90 days in any 180 without a visa, but the validity rule differs by country. Other nationalities: check the ministry list. Visa checker

  2. Add Cappadocia as a domestic flight

Cappadocia is a separate leg from Istanbul, reached by air to Nevşehir or Kayseri. Wind decides whether balloons fly, so allow more than one morning. Cappadocia

  3. Plan mosque visits around prayer times

Working mosques close to visitors during prayer times, and modest dress is expected. Check times on the day and visit between them. Istanbul

  4. Use an Istanbulkart in Istanbul

The rechargeable İstanbulkart is the usual way to pay on Istanbul public transport. The Istanbul guide covers where to start.

  5. Check prices on the day, in lira

High inflation means prices change often. Pay in lira rather than euros or dollars, and choose lira when a card terminal offers conversion. Money and cards

Türkiye FAQ

Do I need a visa for Türkiye?

Not with a US, UK, Canadian, Australian, German or Spanish ordinary passport, for stays of up to 90 days in 180. Passport validity differs: UK and Canadian advice says 150 days from arrival, and Spain's says 6 months. Other nationalities should check the ministry's list.

Is Türkiye in Schengen?

No. Türkiye is outside Schengen and the EU, so days there do not count toward the Schengen 90 in 180, and it sets its own entry rules.

How many days do I need in Türkiye?

Ten days covers Istanbul, Cappadocia and Ephesus with domestic flights. Give Istanbul at least three full days.

What if my balloon flight is canceled?

Wind cancels flights in every season, and policies differ by operator. Read the rebooking and refund terms before you pay, and book early in your stay to leave spare mornings.

When is the best time to visit Türkiye?

April, May, September and October for Istanbul and Cappadocia. The coast is warm enough for swimming from June to October.
