Ölüdeniz is a sheltered lagoon on the Turquoise Coast of southwestern Türkiye, in Muğla Province near Fethiye. The water is calm and clear, with a sandy beach on the lagoon side and the open Mediterranean on the other. Behind the village, Babadağ rises steeply, and tandem paragliding flights take off from its slopes. Day trips from the area include Kayaköy, an abandoned Greek village in the hills, and Butterfly Valley.

Come for a beach stay with a few active days of paragliding, hiking and boat trips along the coast. Summer is the main season for swimming, while spring and early autumn are milder for walking. Two or three nights covers the lagoon and a flight, and a longer stay leaves room for the coves. Dalaman Airport is the nearest major airport, about an hour away by road.

Ölüdeniz in five

  1. Ride the Babadağ cable car at the right hourThe 1200 m cable car runs 08:00 to 20:00 in October and 08:00 to 22:00 in July and August. The operator lists 950 TL return for ages 7 and up; the 1700 m stage runs June to October.Babadağ Teleferik
  2. Book paragliding with a licensed operatorTandem flights launch from Babadağ and depend on wind, so keep a spare day. Ask who holds the pilot licence and confirm your travel insurance covers paragliding before you pay.Travel insurance
  3. Check the nature park gate before the lagoonThe lagoon sits in a protected nature area that charges its own entry, separate from sunbeds and beach clubs. Check the current fee at the gate and ask whether chairs are included.
  4. Take a boat to Butterfly ValleyThe valley has no road, so boats run from the beach and a steep path drops from Faralya. Sea conditions can cancel sailings, so avoid making it your last day.Things to do in Ölüdeniz

Ölüdeniz FAQ

Is Ölüdeniz worth visiting?

Yes for the lagoon, paragliding and boat days, less so if you want a quiet, undeveloped beach in July and August. Go in May, June or September for the same scenery with fewer people.

How many days do you need in Ölüdeniz?

Three days cover a beach day, a flight or cable car, and one boat or Kayaköy trip. Four lets you spread them around wind and weather without rushing.

Is the Babadağ cable car worth it?

Yes on a clear day, for the view over the lagoon and for flights launching from the top. Skip the 1700 m stage on a windy day, because the operator can close the upper stages.

Should you stay in Ölüdeniz or Fethiye?

Ölüdeniz for beach days and flights, Fethiye for restaurants, boats and onward buses. Dolmuş link the two, so a split of a few nights each also works.

When is the best time to visit Ölüdeniz?

May, June, September and early October. The sea is warmest in August and September, but July and August are the hottest and busiest. Paragliding follows the wind and falls off in winter.
