Kalkan is a neighborhood of Kaş district in Antalya Province, on Türkiye's Mediterranean coast, west of Antalya. It is known as an old fishing town, with white-washed houses running down to the sea and bright bougainvillea. It was the only safe harbor between Kaş and Fethiye and served the surrounding area as a seaport until the 1970s. Although it sits in Antalya Province, Kalkan is more closely connected to Fethiye for trade and transport. The town declined after the Fethiye road was built, then revived as tourism grew in the region.
Kalkan's coast has beaches and historical sites. Patara Beach and Kaputaş Beach are fine beaches in the area, and Tlos and Kekova are historical sites in the wider Kalkan area. Turkish sources report no visible Lycian ruins in Kalkan itself, so the ancient sites lie outside town. The town works as a base for a beach day and a trip to Tlos or Kekova. It averages about 300 days of sunshine a year.
Kalkan in five
- Spend a morning at PataraThe Ministry lists Patara as open daily 08:00 to 19:00 with ticket sales to 18:30. The ancient city sits behind a long sand beach in a protected area, so follow the posted rules for sunbeds and evenings.Patara hours
- Treat Kalkan's own beach as a swim stopThe town beach is small, and the long sand day is Patara. Kaputaş cove on the road to Kaş is the other classic stop, reached by a staircase from the highway.
- Match the pass to the ruinsXanthos is on the Mediterranean MuseumPass and Letoon on the Aegean one, so one pass covers one, not both. Compare single tickets with a pass before you buy.
- Walk down to dinner, plan a taxi backThe old town drops steeply to the harbor. Book a sea-view table for sunset and arrange a taxi for the climb back, especially after a long day.
- Book villas early for June and SeptemberPool villas sell out before hotels. Ask how steep the walk is to the harbor and the dolmuş stop, since many sit high up the hillside.Kaş

Read the guideKalkan FAQ
Is Kalkan worth visiting?
Yes, for relaxed evenings, villa stays and easy access to Patara and Xanthos. It is not for sandy beaches in town or late-night bars.
Is Kalkan better than Kaş?
Kalkan suits villas and quiet dinners; Kaş suits diving, boats and a livelier old town. They are about half an hour apart, so a split stay works.
Does Kalkan have a good beach?
The town beach is small, and many people go to Patara for sand or Kaputaş for a cove. Both need a car, dolmuş or a taxi.
How many days do you need in Kalkan?
Three days cover Patara, a boat or ruin day and a slow village day. Four or five suits a villa week.
When is the best time to visit Kalkan?
May, June, September and October. Many restaurants and boats close or cut back from November to March, and August is hot and booked.
